49mm of titanium, 100 m water resistance, dual-frequency GPS, an 86-decibel siren and 36 hours of battery. The Action button debuts here.
Released September 23, 2022 · Discontinued September 22, 2023 · From $799

Apple built a watch for people who go a long way from a charger. 49mm of grade 5 titanium, a flat sapphire front, 100 meter water resistance to diving standard, an operating range from minus 20 to 55 degrees Celsius, and a battery good for 36 hours, or 60 in low power mode. The Action button is new. A customizable orange control on the left side, it is the first physical button Apple has added to a Watch since the original. Dual-frequency GPS tracks L1 and L5 together, which fixes the positioning error you get between tall buildings and down in canyons where a single frequency drifts. An 86-decibel siren carries 180 meters. A depth gauge and the Oceanic+ app make it a recreational dive computer to 40 meters. It costs $799. This is aimed at a considerably smaller group of people than any Watch before it, and Apple seemed comfortable with that.
Reviewers matched Apple's 36-hour claim in practice, getting close to three days of mixed use, and rated the durability and the specialist tools highly. The most common complaint was where Apple put the controls.
The Apple Watch Ultra might be the ultimate smartwatch.
But with a durable build, helpful tools for specialized use cases and watchOS' general capability as a mainstream smartwatch platform, the Watch Ultra is a powerful companion that most outdoor enthusiasts can rely on.
