Apple Watch Series 9

Double Tap, on-device Siri that works without a signal, and 2000 nits. Apple's first product called carbon neutral.

Released September 22, 2023 · Discontinued September 20, 2024 · From $399 (41mm GPS)

Apple Watch Series 9

The interesting thing about the Series 9 is a gesture. Double Tap lets you tap your index finger and thumb together twice to answer a call, stop a timer or scroll, detected by the accelerometer, gyroscope and optical heart sensor working together through a machine learning model on the new S9 chip. It works one-handed while you are carrying something, which is exactly when you want it. The S9 also brought a four-core Neural Engine and on-device Siri that processes requests without a network round trip, so setting a timer works with no signal at all. Peak brightness doubled to 2000 nits. Apple also called certain case and band combinations carbon neutral, which was the first such claim the company had made about any of its products.

Reviews & Reception

Double Tap and on-device Siri were the changes, on an exterior unchanged from the Series 8.

The Series 9 is a capable, well-rounded smartwatch that remains the best in the category.

Double Tap and on-device Siri alone may be reasons enough to trade in your older Apple Watch (yes, even the Series 8), especially if you hate having to swipe or tap a tiny screen on your wrist.
