Cellular via a built-in eSIM made the Watch independent of the phone. Apple then kept it on sale five years too long.

The Series 3 added cellular, which is the feature that made the Watch an independent device rather than a phone accessory. An eSIM built into the display laminate let it hold a phone number and stay connected with the iPhone left at home, and Apple demonstrated it by taking a call while paddleboarding. It also brought a barometric altimeter for tracking floors climbed and a processor 70 percent faster than the Series 2. Apple then kept it on sale for five years as the cheap model. That was a mistake. Its 8GB of storage could not hold later watchOS updates, and by 2022 owners were being told to delete apps to install security patches. Apple discontinued it in September 2022 to a certain amount of relief.
LTE arrived, and reviewers drew a sharp line between the Watch tethered to a phone and the Watch on its own.
