Apple Vision Pro

23 million pixels across two micro-OLED panels, eye and hand control with no controllers, and an external battery good for two hours.

Apple Vision Pro

Apple shipped a $3,499 headset in February 2024 and asked people to take it seriously as a computer. The hardware is genuinely extraordinary. Two micro-OLED panels hold 23 million pixels between them, more than a 4K television per eye, and twelve cameras, five sensors and six microphones feed an M2 and a dedicated R1 chip that processes sensor input in 12 milliseconds, fast enough that the passthrough video does not make you ill. You control it by looking at something and tapping your fingers together, with no controllers at all, and it works well enough to be unremarkable within minutes. The problems are weight, at 600 to 650 grams on your face, an external battery pack good for about two hours, and a shortage of things to actually do. EyeSight, the outward display showing a video of your eyes, is the one part that nobody defends.

Reviews & Reception

Reviewers called the hardware extraordinary and the product itself a long list of compromises, with the weight, the two-hour battery and the shortage of software doing most of the damage.

That is a lot of tradeoffs — big tradeoffs, not little ones.

I don't want to get work done in the Vision Pro. I get my work done with other people, and I'd rather be out here with them.
