Housed in the now-iconic graphite-and-translucent tower with its swing-out side door, this machine carried forward the design language of the Blue & White G3 while packing genuinely new engineering underneath. The star of the show was Motorola's PowerPC 7400 (and later 7450) processor with the AltiVec vector unit, which Apple marketed relentlessly as the Velocity Engine. Apple's claim that the G4 qualified as a supercomputer under U.S. export regulations became a genuine controversy and a marketing gift, generating headlines and a lawsuit against Intel over the term, even as skeptics noted the FLOPS figures depended heavily on hand-tuned AltiVec code rather than everyday application performance. Clock speeds ranged from a modest 350MHz at launch up through 450 and 500MHz revisions, competing against Pentium III and early Pentium 4 systems that often won raw megahertz comparisons but lacked the G4's vector throughput for tasks like video encoding and Photoshop filters. The PowerPC 7400 introduced the AltiVec vector processing unit, branded by Apple as the Velocity Engine, enabling dramatic speedups in media encoding, graphics filters, and scientific computation compared to the preceding G3. Clocked between 350 and 500MHz in this generation, it traded raw clock speed against contemporary Pentium III/4 chips for superior throughput in vectorized workloads.
