Inside its imposing minitower sat a PowerPC 604 running at 120 or 132 MHz at launch (with 150 MHz variants following), paired with a dozen DIMM slots capable of holding a then-astonishing 1.5GB of RAM and six full-length PCI slots for video, SCSI, and audio cards. Video professionals, print shops, and early desktop-video pioneers embraced the 9500 almost immediately, since its expansion headroom made it the natural home for digitizing cards, RAID controllers, and multiple-monitor setups long before such configurations were common. Running System 7.5.1, the 9500 felt noticeably snappier than the outgoing NuBus Power Macs, and its raw throughput on integer and floating-point workloads held its own against contemporary Pentium and Pentium Pro workstations, even as Apple's marketing leaned hard into 'you paid Intel prices, you got Intel performance, but you also got the Mac OS.' Build quality was substantial if unglamorous: a big beige case with a flip-down front door concealing the drive bays, generous cooling, and a case design that would echo through Apple's tower line for years afterward. Some early units suffered from a notorious logic-board defect involving a poorly designed clock-doubling circuit that led to a recall and replacement program, an embarrassing hiccup for a machine otherwise praised for capability. Still, the 9500 became beloved among Avid and Media 100 video editors, desktop publishers, and audio professionals who valued its slot count and RAM ceiling far more than clock speed bragging rights. It effectively established the template Apple would refine through the 7300, the beige G3 minitower, and eventually the Blue and White G3 and Power Mac G4: a PCI-expandable professional tower with room to grow. The PowerPC 604 was a superscalar, out-of-order execution RISC processor jointly developed by the AIM alliance (Apple, IBM, Motorola) as a high-performance successor to the 601. It could issue up to four instructions per cycle across six execution units, giving it a substantial lead over the 601 in integer and floating-point workloads. At launch it traded blows with Intel's Pentium at similar clock speeds despite running at lower megahertz figures, reinforcing the RISC-versus-CISC performance debate of the mid-1990s.
