Its defining feature was the daughtercard processor design: the CPU lived on a removable card rather than being soldered to the logic board, so early 601-based 7500 owners could later drop in a 604 or even a G3 upgrade card as Apple and third parties released them, extending the machine's useful life well beyond its 1995 PowerPC 601 100MHz launch configuration. Running Mac OS 7.5.2, the 7500 offered three PCI slots, a roomy case, and the same NuBus-to-PCI generational leap that defined this entire family, giving it access to modern graphics and SCSI cards that NuBus machines could never use. Reviewers of the day appreciated that the 7500 undercut the 9500's price considerably while still offering genuine expansion headroom, making it popular with schools, small businesses, and enthusiasts who valued the upgrade path as much as day-one performance. Compared to Windows PCs of 1995, the 601-based configuration was already looking a little dated next to the fastest Pentiums, but Apple's willingness to let it evolve via the CPU daughtercard softened that criticism considerably, and many 7500s soldiered on for years after their original processors would have been embarrassingly slow. The case design, a low-slung desktop tower with a flip-open front door, would recur across Apple's mid-1990s Power Macs and set visual continuity through the 7200, 7300, and later beige G3 minitower lines. Its removable CPU card became something of a cult feature among Mac tinkerers, spawning a small industry of third-party upgrade cards that kept 7500s technologically relevant into the G3 era for those unwilling to buy new hardware outright. While it never carried the video-production glamour of the 8500 or the raw horsepower of the 9500, the 7500 earned its keep as the sensible, adaptable Power Mac, a machine that rewarded owners willing to invest incrementally rather than replace the whole computer. The PowerPC 601 was the first PowerPC processor to ship in Apple hardware, a joint IBM/Motorola design that launched the Power Macintosh line in 1994.
