The PowerBook 5300, introduced August 28, 1995, holds a significant if uncomfortable place in Mac history as Apple's first PowerPC-based portable, replacing the 68040-based 500 series with a PowerPC 603e chip running at 100 or 117MHz under Mac OS 7.5.2. On paper it promised a generational leap for mobile Mac users, bringing desktop-class RISC performance to a laptop form factor and supporting a new 640x480 or optional active-matrix color display, along with a redesigned case that was notably lighter than its predecessor. In practice, the 5300 became one of the most notorious PowerBook launches in Apple's history. Its lithium-ion battery, cutting-edge for the time and intended to offer better energy density than the nickel-metal-hydride packs of earlier PowerBooks, proved dangerously unstable; a battery actually caught fire during pre-release testing, forcing Apple to delay the top-of-the-line 5300c models and later recall and replace batteries across the line. Beyond the battery fiasco, early units suffered from a fragile plastic case prone to cracking, especially around the hinges, and some daring engineering decisions like a swappable expansion bay meant to hold either a floppy drive, CD-ROM, or extra battery introduced their own reliability quirks. Reviewers of the era were disappointed that a machine positioned as PowerPC's mobile debut instead became a case study in rushed engineering, especially since rival Windows-based laptops from Toshiba and IBM were shipping dependable Pentium-based systems around the same time without comparable safety incidents. Yet underneath the controversy, the 603e processor itself was a genuinely efficient, low-power chip well suited to mobile use, and later revisions of the 5300 line, along with its direct successor the PowerBook 1400, benefited from the lessons learned here. For Apple, the 5300 became a cautionary tale referenced for years afterward about rushing new battery chemistry and case materials to market, and it contributed to a broader sense of crisis at Apple in 1995 and 1996 that would eventually help bring Steve Jobs back into the fold. Despite its troubled reputation, the 5300 remains historically important as the machine that proved, however painfully, that PowerPC could go mobile, paving the way for the vastly more successful 3400c and G3-based PowerBooks that followed.
The PowerPC 603e was a low-power derivative of the original 603 core, designed specifically with battery-powered portable computing in mind, featuring a larger on-chip cache and improved efficiency over its predecessor. Running at 100 or 117MHz in the PowerBook 5300, it delivered solid performance per watt for its era, an important consideration given the limited battery technology available in 1995. It compared reasonably well to contemporary mobile Pentium chips in efficiency, even if raw clock speeds lagged, and its architecture would go on to power several subsequent PowerBook generations.
