The chassis carried forward the now-iconic PowerBook industrial design, a recessed keyboard for palm-rest comfort, a centered trackball, and a dense, functional layout that rival PC laptop makers openly studied and imitated. Beyond the superior screen, the 180 offered a math coprocessor option and could be configured with more RAM and storage than the 160, making it genuinely competitive with desktop Macs for many tasks, a rarity for laptops of the period. Reviewers were effusive about the active-matrix display in particular, since it was the first time a Mac notebook screen felt genuinely comfortable for prolonged use, free of the smeared cursor trails that made fast scrolling or dragging a chore on cheaper LCDs. Against Windows-based competitors, many still shipping with monochrome STN screens, the 180 was frequently cited as proof that Apple's portable engineering led the industry. It wasn't cheap, commanding a premium price that put it out of reach for casual buyers, and its battery life, while adequate, was shorter than the more power-conservative 160 due to the more demanding screen and faster clock. Some also noted that despite the faster processor, real-world performance gains over the 160 were modest for typical office tasks, meaning the 180's real draw was overwhelmingly the display quality rather than raw speed. Still, it earned a lasting reputation as the connoisseur's PowerBook of its generation, the machine serious professionals bought when budget wasn't the primary constraint.
