Debuting on February 10, 1993, the PowerBook 165c holds a special place in Mac history as Apple's very first color PowerBook, bringing a passive-matrix color TFT display to the company's portable line for the first time and signaling that color computing was coming to laptops in earnest. Built around a 33MHz 68030 processor and running System 7.1, the 165c shared its core architecture with the monochrome 165 but paired it with an 8-bit color screen capable of displaying 256 colors, a genuine milestone even though the passive-matrix technology of the era came with real compromises. The screen suffered from noticeable ghosting and slow refresh rates, meaning fast mouse movement or scrolling produced smeared trails, and colors could appear washed out compared to what desktop CRT users were used to. Despite these shortcomings, the 165c generated enormous excitement in the Mac community simply for existing, it proved Apple was serious about bringing color portability to market, and it opened the door for the far more capable active-matrix color PowerBooks that would follow just months later. Weight and battery life took a hit compared to monochrome PowerBooks, since color passive-matrix displays drew considerably more power, and the 165c's price commanded a steep premium that put it out of reach for many buyers who might have otherwise wanted the novelty of color on the go. Target buyers were largely early adopters, design professionals wanting to preview color work in the field, and enthusiasts eager to own Apple's latest first, rather than mainstream road warriors, who often found the 145 or 160 more practical and affordable. Reviewers were candid about the tradeoffs, frequently praising the achievement of color in a portable while cautioning that the sluggish, ghost-prone screen made it a hard sell for demanding graphics work. In hindsight, the 165c is remembered as a transitional, somewhat rough-edged pioneer, important historically but quickly overshadowed by the vastly superior active-matrix 180c released just a few months later in June 1993. Within the broader PowerBook story, the 165c represents the necessary, imperfect first step in Apple's color portable strategy, a machine whose ambition mattered more than its execution, but one that paved the way for a rapid succession of far more polished color laptops throughout the mid-1990s.
