Positioned below the faster 180 but above the entry-level 145, the 160 was aimed squarely at professionals and students who needed dependable portable computing without paying a premium for top-tier speed, and it sold well precisely because it hit that sweet spot of price, weight, and usability. Compared to Windows-based laptops of the era, many of which still used dim monochrome LCDs or bulky designs, the 160's combination of Apple's refined chassis and a crisp greyscale screen made it a standout, and it helped extend the PowerBook line's reputation as the benchmark others measured themselves against. Battery life was respectable but not exceptional, and expansion options remained limited to a single SCSI port and a proprietary expansion bay shared across the 100-series.
