When Steve Jobs slid the PowerBook G4 out of a manila envelope at Macworld San Francisco in January 2001, he redefined what a professional laptop could look like. The titanium alloy enclosure, chosen for its strength-to-weight ratio, gave the machine a cool, jewel-like sheen unlike any laptop on the market and immediately earned it the affectionate nickname 'TiBook' among the Mac faithful. At launch it was the thinnest laptop in the world, with a 15.2-inch widescreen display, an aspect ratio choice ahead of its time for a Mac laptop, wrapped in a case that felt more like a piece of industrial art than a piece of computing equipment. Under the hood sat a PowerPC 7410 G4 starting at 400MHz on the first units, quickly climbing through 500, 550, 667, 800, and eventually 1GHz revisions using the 7445 as Apple refined the line over its three-year run. Against the Intel-based competition, which was just entering the Centrino era of integrated Wi-Fi and improved battery life, the TiBook held its own on portability and screen real estate even as raw CPU benchmarks sometimes favored Pentium 4-M and early Pentium M-based rivals from Dell, Sony, and IBM's ThinkPad line. Shipping with Mac OS X 10.0 while still supporting the Classic environment, the TiBook served as the flagship for creative professionals, editors, and executives who wanted power and prestige in the same case, and it played a starring role in Apple's broader push toward OS X adoption throughout 2001 and 2002. It was not without quirks: early titanium finishes were prone to paint chipping around the edges and hinge corners, and the plastic display bezel on some units became brittle and cracked over time, issues Apple addressed gradually across revisions without ever fully eliminating consumer complaints. Even so, the design cues the TiBook introduced, including the widescreen display and the slot-loading optical drive, directly influenced the aluminum PowerBooks that followed in 2003 and arguably the entire modern MacBook Pro lineage. The 7410 was a low-power derivative of the G4 line built specifically for the thermal constraints of laptops, retaining the AltiVec Velocity Engine for accelerated media tasks while sipping far less power than desktop G4 chips. Later revisions moved to the 7445 as clock speeds climbed from 400MHz to 1GHz across the TiBook's lifespan. Compared to contemporary Intel Pentium 4-M and early Pentium M mobile chips, the G4 offered strong multimedia performance per clock but often trailed in raw integer throughput and battery efficiency. It represented Motorola's best attempt at bringing desktop-class vector processing into a genuinely portable form factor.
