Launched on January 16, 1986, the Macintosh Plus was the machine that made the Mac a legitimately serious computer, and its staying power was extraordinary: Apple kept it in production for four and a half years, longer than any other Mac model before or since. Its headline addition was the SCSI port, the first on any Macintosh, which finally allowed external hard drives and a growing ecosystem of peripherals to connect at speeds far beyond what the slow serial ports of earlier Macs could manage. Paired with a new 800K double-sided floppy drive and a full megabyte of RAM, expandable to 4MB through user-installed SIMMs, the Plus addressed nearly every major complaint leveled at the 128K and 512K: memory was no longer a chronic bottleneck, storage was faster and roomier, and for the first time Mac owners could realistically consider a hard drive as part of their setup. The CPU remained the familiar 7.83MHz Motorola 68000, so raw computational speed was unchanged, but the surrounding system was so much more capable that the Plus felt like a genuinely different class of machine in daily use. Its keyboard also introduced the numeric keypad and arrow keys that Mac users had been requesting since 1984, addressing complaints that the original Mac was hostile to touch typists and spreadsheet users. Reviewers and business buyers responded enthusiastically, and the Plus became the machine that convinced many skeptical PC-centric offices to give the Macintosh a serious look, particularly as desktop publishing with PageMaker and LaserWriter printers became a killer application nobody in the DOS world could match. Its low, boxy, all-in-one design remained unmistakably a compact Mac, a shape that would define Apple's consumer line for years, even as the far more expandable and colorful Macintosh II arrived in 1987 to serve power users. The Plus's remarkable longevity in Apple's lineup, selling continuously until October 1990, speaks to how well-balanced and fundamentally sound its design was, and how much goodwill it built among a generation of users, students, and small businesses for whom it was often their very first computer. It is remembered today not merely as an incremental update but as the machine that proved the Macintosh concept could scale into something durable, expandable, and professionally credible, cementing SCSI, expandable memory, and a properly equipped keyboard as Mac standards for the following decade.
The Plus retained the same 7.83MHz 68000 used since 1984, so its improvements over earlier compact Macs came entirely from expanded RAM, SCSI support, and better storage rather than raw CPU throughput. The chip's straightforward 32-bit internal architecture remained easy to program for and was well understood by the developer community by this point. It was, by 1986 standards, beginning to lag behind the 68020 chips appearing in higher-end workstations. Even so, its reliability and mature toolchain made it a safe, well-supported choice for Apple's flagship compact Mac for years to come.
