Announced September 19, 1988, the Macintosh IIx served as the direct successor to the groundbreaking Macintosh II, swapping in Motorola's newer 68030 processor while keeping the same 16MHz clock speed and largely the same modular NuBus chassis. On paper the clock speed looked unchanged, but the 68030's integrated memory management unit and improved internal architecture meant real-world performance gains, particularly for virtual memory and multitasking-oriented workloads that System software was increasingly beginning to support. The IIx also introduced Apple's new FDHD SuperDrive floppy mechanism, capable of reading and writing 1.44MB high-density disks and, notably, MS-DOS formatted disks as well, a genuinely useful feature for the growing number of offices juggling both Macintosh and PC hardware. It retained the Mac II's six NuBus expansion slots and modular tower design, continuing to serve publishing houses, engineering firms, and universities that needed serious expandability and color graphics capability. Apple bundled an optional 68882 floating-point coprocessor socket as well, appealing to scientific and engineering customers doing heavy numeric computation. Reviewers generally saw the IIx as a sensible, if somewhat unexciting, evolutionary step rather than a dramatic leap, since the clock speed parity with the original Mac II meant the performance gains were more architectural than immediately obvious in everyday tasks; some critics questioned whether the price premium over the older Mac II was fully justified given the modest headline differences. Still, professionals who needed the MMU for serious multitasking under upcoming System software, along with the improved disk compatibility, found real value in the upgrade, and its built-in FPU socket support made it attractive for CAD, scientific, and financial modeling applications. It also served as an important bridge machine, keeping the high-end Mac II chassis relevant while Apple worked on the far more dramatic IIci and IIfx that would follow within the next two years and truly capitalize on the 68030's capabilities with much higher clock speeds. The IIx's price remained steep, keeping it firmly in professional and institutional markets rather than reaching mainstream consumers, but it cemented the 68030 as the new baseline processor for Apple's high-end modular Macs going forward. Today the IIx is remembered as a solid, if transitional, entry in the Mac II family, notable mainly for introducing the 68030 and SuperDrive to Apple's professional line and setting the stage for the far more celebrated machines that followed.
The 68030 built on the 68020's fully 32-bit design by integrating a paged memory management unit directly onto the chip, eliminating the need for a separate 68851 PMMU and improving virtual memory performance considerably. It also added a small internal data cache alongside its instruction cache, improving throughput on many workloads even at equivalent clock speeds to the 68020. At 16MHz in the IIx it offered modest but real gains over the Mac II's 68020, and its integrated MMU made it far better suited to the multitasking and virtual memory features that later System software releases would depend on. It became the standard processor across most of Apple's mid-range and professional Macs through the early 1990s.
