The 2015 twelve-inch MacBook was Apple's boldest laptop design experiment of the decade, an attempt to imagine what a MacBook would look like if built with zero compromise toward thinness and weight. At just 13.1mm thick and roughly two pounds, it was the thinnest and lightest Mac ever made, achieved by adopting Intel's fanless Core M Broadwell processors running at a mere 1.1 to 1.3GHz, low-power chips that let Apple eliminate the cooling fan entirely for a completely silent machine. That silence came at a real performance cost: the Core M chips were noticeably sluggish compared to the standard-voltage processors in the MacBook Air and Pro lines, making the machine best suited to writing, browsing, and light productivity rather than demanding creative work. The industrial design was audacious in other ways too: a single USB-C port handled charging, video output, and data, forcing early adopters into a world of dongles years before USB-C became mainstream, and the new butterfly-mechanism keyboard, with dramatically reduced key travel, debuted here for the first time, a design later carried into the MacBook Pro line where it would become one of the most controversial keyboard designs in Mac history due to reliability problems with dust and debris. The Force Touch trackpad, using haptic feedback rather than a physically moving click, also made its debut on this machine. Critics were genuinely torn: many admired the astonishing industrial design and portability, treating it as a glimpse of a fanless, cableless future, while others found the singular port impractical and the performance too compromised for a machine costing as much as the more capable MacBook Air. In retrospect, the 12-inch MacBook is remembered as a fascinating design showcase and a proving ground for ideas, USB-C, butterfly keys, Force Touch, that would ripple through the rest of the Mac lineup, even though Apple would ultimately discontinue the line itself in 2019 as the MacBook Air absorbed its thin-and-light positioning without the compromises.
This fanless dual-core Broadwell-Y chip was designed from the ground up for extreme thermal envelopes as low as 4.5 watts, prioritizing silence and battery life over raw speed. Compared to AMD's mobile APUs of the time, Intel's Core M offered better efficiency and graphics per watt, but its low clock speeds made it noticeably slower than standard-voltage Core i5/i7 chips used in competing thin laptops. It represented Intel's most aggressive low-power x86 design to date, a precursor to the ultra-efficient mobile chip philosophy Apple Silicon would later perfect.
