Announced alongside the Intel iMac on that same January 2006 keynote, the first MacBook Pro replaced the PowerBook G4 and represented Apple's first Intel-based professional laptop. It introduced two innovations that would define Apple notebooks for years to come: the MagSafe magnetic power connector, which instantly became beloved for preventing laptops from crashing to the floor when someone tripped over a cord, and a built-in iSight camera for video chatting via the new iChat AV. Powered by Intel's Core Duo processor at speeds from 1.67GHz to 2.16GHz, the MacBook Pro delivered a night-and-day performance improvement over the aging PowerPC G4 chip in the last PowerBooks, particularly in floating-point and multithreaded workloads, even though early units notably ran hotter and had shorter battery life than Apple's official estimates suggested, a discrepancy that drew criticism and an eventual firmware fix. The aluminum unibody-adjacent design (still riveted and bonded rather than the later CNC-milled unibody) carried over the PowerBook's brushed metal aesthetic, keeping the widescreen 15-inch display and glowing Apple logo that professionals had come to expect. Reception among creative professionals, the MacBook Pro's core audience of video editors, designers, and developers, was enthusiastic but watchful; the same Rosetta translation concerns that shadowed the Intel iMac applied here too, and pro apps like Final Cut Pro and Photoshop took months to arrive in native Universal Binary form, frustrating power users who bought in early. Still, the speed gains were undeniable, and reviewers consistently ranked it as a superior machine to anything in the PC laptop space at the time in terms of build quality and display quality, if not always benchmarks against high-end Windows workstations. A 17-inch model followed shortly after. The 2006 MacBook Pro is remembered as the bridge that carried Apple's professional laptop lineage from the PowerPC era into the Intel age, cementing the naming convention 'MacBook Pro' that persists to this day, and introducing MagSafe as a signature piece of Apple hardware identity that would last until USB-C ultimately replaced it in 2016 (before Apple, tellingly, brought MagSafe back to the MacBook Pro line in 2021, proving how right they got it the first time).
The same Yonah-based Core Duo used in the Intel iMac powered the first MacBook Pro, giving Apple's flagship laptop a dual-core, 65nm processor with far better efficiency than the PowerPC G4 chips it replaced. It lacked 64-bit extensions, a limitation that would later cap its operating system lifespan earlier than its Core 2 Duo successor. Competitively it stood alongside Intel's own Pentium M-derived mobile chips used by PC laptop makers at the time, offering similar performance in a notably more polished chassis. Its main legacy is enabling Apple's professional line to make the Intel leap without sacrificing thermal or battery characteristics too badly, aside from some early teething problems.
