Built around a full-size keyboard and 13.3-inch display shoehorned into a wedge-shaped unibody aluminum enclosure, the Air sacrificed almost everything in the name of thinness: there was no built-in optical drive (a first for a mainstream Apple laptop, wildly controversial at the time), only a single USB port, no Ethernet jack, and a non-removable battery, decisions that struck plenty of critics as impractical for a machine costing $1,799 and up. It ran a specially underclocked, custom Intel Core 2 Duo processor at 1.6GHz or 1.8GHz, and buyers could option a then-exotic and eye-wateringly expensive 64GB solid-state drive instead of the standard 80GB spinning hard drive, a choice almost nobody made given SSD pricing at the time but which pointed unmistakably toward computing's future. Reception split cleanly along expected lines: design enthusiasts and the tech press were captivated by the sheer audacity of the engineering and the iconic image of Jobs pulling it from an envelope, while practically minded reviewers hammered the compromises, the single USB port that forced constant peripheral juggling, a fragile-feeling optional external SuperDrive sold separately for disc-based tasks, mediocre battery life, and performance noticeably behind the standard MacBook and MacBook Pro due to the underclocked processor and slower first-generation SSD or PATA-style hard drive options. It was, by Apple's own positioning, not meant for everyone: it targeted road warriors and status-conscious professionals willing to pay a steep premium for portability above all else, a genuine niche rather than a mainstream replacement for the MacBook. Commercially it was a modest seller in its first generation, criticized as more concept car than practical daily driver, but its influence proved massive: it effectively invented the 'ultrabook' category years before Intel coined that term to describe PC manufacturers scrambling to copy it, and its DNA, thin wedge shape, unibody construction, flash storage as default, no optical drive, runs through every thin-and-light laptop made since, Apple's and otherwise. It remains one of the most iconic, era-defining reveals in Apple's history even though the first-generation hardware itself was, by wide consensus, seriously compromised.
Intel built a special reduced-size package of the Core 2 Duo specifically for the MacBook Air, shrinking the chip package footprint by roughly 60 percent to fit Apple's ultra-thin wedge chassis. Clocked conservatively at 1.6GHz or 1.8GHz to manage heat in such a constrained enclosure, it traded some raw performance for the physical space savings that made the Air's design possible at all. It was noticeably slower in real-world use than the standard-voltage Core 2 Duo chips in the contemporary MacBook and MacBook Pro. Its legacy lies less in performance than in proving that a full x86 Intel processor could be packaged small enough to enable an entirely new class of ultraportable laptop.
