The extra memory unlocked more ambitious third-party software, including early versions of Microsoft Word and Excel-precursor spreadsheets, and made the Mac a genuinely viable tool for word processing and desktop publishing rather than just a compelling demo. Performance was otherwise unchanged, still built around the 7.83MHz Motorola 68000, so the 512K did nothing to address the platform's other early frustrations: no internal hard drive, only one floppy drive slot, and a closed case that discouraged user upgrades.
