Where the Apple Lisa had pioneered the mouse-driven, windowed interface a year earlier at a ruinous $9,995, the Macintosh brought the same essential ideas to a comparatively approachable $2,495. Its compact, vertically-oriented all-in-one case, designed largely by Jerry Manock, gave it a friendly, almost anthropomorphic presence that stood in stark contrast to the beige boxes and green-screen terminals that defined the rest of the industry. Inside sat a Motorola 68000 running at 7.83MHz paired with just 128 kilobytes of RAM, a figure that proved painfully limiting almost immediately; the system software, screen buffer, and application code left barely enough headroom to run more than the bundled MacWrite and MacPaint, and the single 400K floppy drive meant constant disk-swapping became a way of life for early adopters. The 9-inch black-and-white screen at 512x342 resolution delivered crisp, bitmapped graphics and proportional fonts that were revelatory next to the blocky character displays of the IBM PC and Apple II, and the mouse-and-menu paradigm it popularized would become the template for virtually every personal computer interface that followed. Critics and enthusiasts were captivated by the vision but frustrated by the practical limitations: no internal expansion, no hard drive support, and a closed case that Apple famously sealed with special tools to keep tinkerers out, embodying Steve Jobs's insistence on tight control over the whole widget. Sales started slower than Apple hoped once the initial hype cooled, hampered by the thin software library and the RAM ceiling, and it took the release of the 512K "Fat Mac" later that year to make the platform genuinely usable for serious work. The 68000 was Motorola's first entry in the 68k family, using a 32-bit internal architecture with a 16-bit external data bus, giving it a large flat 24-bit address space unusual for its era. It offered a clean, orthogonal instruction set that made it a favorite among programmers and was also used in the Commodore Amiga, Atari ST, and Sega Genesis. Compared to the Intel 8088 found in early IBM PCs, the 68000 offered more registers and a more elegant programming model, though the Mac's implementation was hamstrung by limited RAM. It became the foundation for Apple's entire compact Mac lineage through the late 1980s.
