Apple's pitch was radical minimalism: a machine roughly one-eighth the volume of its predecessor, silent, and built entirely around external Thunderbolt 2 expansion. In practice, this became the design's central controversy. Professionals who relied on internal storage bays, multiple standard GPUs, or PCIe expansion cards found themselves boxed in, needing expensive external Thunderbolt breakout chassis to replicate workflows that used to be trivial. Worse, the dual-GPU architecture meant that many professional applications, particularly those unoptimized for OpenCL or dual-GPU load balancing, saw little to no benefit from the second card, and the small thermal core led to real-world throttling under sustained heavy loads, undercutting the workstation-class performance promise.
