Released September 20, 1989, the Macintosh Portable was Apple's first attempt at a battery-powered Mac, and it was a fascinating, deeply flawed, and historically important machine in equal measure. At nearly 16 pounds it was a far cry from what we would today call portable, earning it the somewhat unkind nickname of a "luggable" rather than a true laptop, but it packed genuinely impressive engineering for its time, including the first backlit active-matrix-adjacent display ever fitted to a Mac and an astonishing battery life of roughly ten hours thanks to a lead-acid battery pack that contributed enormously to its considerable heft. Built around a 68000 processor running at a relatively brisk 16MHz, faster than the original compact Macs despite sharing the same chip family, the Portable offered respectable performance for its era, and its high-quality active-matrix display, while black and white, was crisp and readable, a genuine point of pride given how many contemporary portable computers used far inferior passive-matrix or plasma screens. It included a built-in trackball rather than requiring an external mouse, an ergonomic choice ahead of its time, and its keyboard was widely praised for feeling nearly identical to a proper desktop keyboard rather than the cramped compromises typical of portable computers of the day. However, the Portable's price was steep, its weight made genuine portability a stretch, and its battery, while long-lasting, could not be easily swapped and left the machine feeling more like a transportable desktop replacement than a true mobile companion. Reviewers were impressed by its screen quality, keyboard, and battery endurance but frequently criticized its bulk and price relative to lighter, if less capable, competitors emerging from Toshiba, Compaq, and other portable PC makers. The Portable used a 16MHz variant of the venerable 68000, a notable speed bump over the 7.83MHz chips used in Apple's contemporary compact desktop Macs while retaining full software compatibility with the existing Mac ecosystem. Its CMOS fabrication, as opposed to the older NMOS process used in earlier 68000 implementations, helped reduce power consumption, an important consideration for a battery-powered machine. Despite the useful clock speed increase, the chip remained architecturally identical to the original 1979 design, lacking the integrated MMU and improved instruction set of the newer 68030 already shipping in Apple's high-end desktop Macs. It represented a reasonable compromise between performance and power efficiency for Apple's first battery-powered machine.
