When Steve Jobs walked onto the Macworld San Francisco stage on January 10, 2006 and announced that the iMac now ran on Intel silicon, it marked the opening shot of the most consequential hardware transition in Apple's history. The Intel iMac looked nearly identical to the G5 iMac it replaced, its white polycarbonate shell and aluminum foot unchanged, but beneath the surface everything was new. Powered by Intel's Core Duo chip running at up to 2.0GHz, this was the same 'Yonah' mobile processor found in contemporaries' laptops, chosen for its excellent performance-per-watt rather than raw desktop muscle. Apple's own benchmarks claimed it was two to three times faster than the G5 iMac it replaced, and independent testing largely bore that out, especially for multitasking and applications that could exploit the dual-core design. Running Mac OS X 10.4.4 Tigris with a special build to support the x86 architecture, the machine relied on Apple's new Rosetta translation layer to run old PowerPC software, a clever but imperfect stopgap that slowed down non-native apps considerably. Reception was a mixture of astonishment and caution. Reviewers marveled at the speed jump and the fact Apple had pulled off the transition without any public stumble, but early adopters worried aloud about buying into a platform mid-transition, uncertain how quickly native Universal Binary software would arrive. It arrived faster than skeptics expected, with Adobe, Microsoft, and other major developers releasing Universal versions within the year. The Intel iMac's target audience was the same as ever: students, families, creative professionals, and Mac loyalists, but the underlying message was existential โ€” Apple was betting its entire desktop and later laptop lineup on Intel after years of PowerPC promises about the G5 reaching 3GHz that never materialized on the desktop, let alone in a notebook. This model effectively ended the PowerPC era for the iMac line in a single stroke, a mere eleven months into what became a full lineup conversion completed by August 2006. It's remembered less for its industrial design, which was a holdover from 2004, than for what it represented: proof that Apple could execute a bet-the-company architecture change smoothly, setting the stage for everything from Boot Camp to the modern Mac's shared DNA with Windows PCs. Collectors and historians view it today as a pivotal, if visually unglamorous, artifact of Apple's most audacious hardware gamble.

Core Duo, codenamed Yonah, was Intel's first mainstream mobile dual-core processor and the chip Apple chose to launch its historic PowerPC-to-Intel transition. Built on a 65nm process, it offered dramatically better performance-per-watt than the PowerPC G4 and G5 chips it replaced, though it was 32-bit only and lacked EM64T support, which later capped its OS compatibility.
