When Apple pulled the sheet off the iMac G4 in January 2002, it unveiled what remains one of the most beloved industrial designs in the company's history. Gone was the candy-colored plastic egg of the original iMac, replaced by a hemispherical dome base housing all the electronics, topped by a flat LCD panel mounted on a chrome articulated arm that could tilt, swivel, and pivot with an almost lifelike fluidity. Nicknamed the 'Sunflower' or simply the 'Lamp' for its unmistakable resemblance to a desk lamp, or even a nod to Pixar's iconic Luxo Jr. mascot, the design came out of Apple's industrial design team under Jony Ive and instantly became a symbol of the company's post-Cube design confidence, proving that Apple could build something both whimsical and seriously well-engineered. Inside sat a PowerPC 7441 or 7445 G4 processor ranging from 700MHz at launch up to 1.25GHz in later revisions, competing against Pentium 4 desktops that generally posted higher clock speeds but often lacked the elegant simplicity and all-in-one convenience the iMac offered mainstream consumers, students, and home users who were the machine's primary target audience. Running Mac OS X 10.1.2 out of the box, the iMac G4 arrived at a pivotal moment when Apple was pushing hard to migrate its user base away from the aging Mac OS 9, and its approachable, friendly design helped make OS X feel inviting rather than intimidating to everyday users. The articulated arm was more than a gimmick, offering genuine ergonomic benefit by letting users adjust screen height and angle far more freely than any flat-panel display of the era, and this flexibility became a signature talking point in Apple's advertising. Critics and consumers alike showered the machine with near-universal praise, and it went on to win numerous design awards, cementing its status as a piece of technology so aesthetically distinct that it remains instantly recognizable decades later and is frequently cited alongside the original iMac and the iPhone as one of Apple's most influential product designs. Its legacy runs deep: the dome-and-arm concept never returned in later Macs, but its underlying philosophy, that a computer could be sculptural, personable, and technically elegant all at once, echoed forward into the aluminum iMac G5 and every all-in-one Apple has built since. For an entire generation of Mac users, the Lamp iMac represents the moment Apple's design language matured from playful plastic novelty into something approaching timeless art.
The 7441 and later 7445 G4 chips powered the iMac G4 at clock speeds from 700MHz up to 1.25GHz across its production run, carrying the AltiVec Velocity Engine for accelerated multimedia tasks like iMovie editing and iTunes encoding. These chips balanced power efficiency against the compact dome enclosure's limited cooling, making them well suited to a fanless-adjacent, consumer-friendly design. Against contemporary Pentium 4 desktops running at much higher clock speeds, the G4 traded raw throughput for efficient vector processing and lower heat output. The chip family reflected Motorola's, and later Freescale's post-spinoff, continued refinement of the G4 core for mainstream consumer machines.
