To achieve this, Apple abandoned the internal optical drive entirely and switched to friction-stir welding to fuse the aluminum enclosure, a manufacturing technique borrowed from aerospace. Inside, Ivy Bridge Core i5 and i7 chips clocked from 2.7 to 3.4GHz brought a modest but real performance bump over the 2011 Sandy Bridge generation, paired with Nvidia GeForce GT 640M/650M or GTX 675MX/680MX graphics depending on configuration. The signature innovation was Fusion Drive, Apple's clever hybrid storage scheme that paired a small SSD with a traditional hard disk and used software to automatically migrate frequently accessed files to flash storage, delivering much of the snappiness of an SSD at hard-drive prices and capacities. Apple also laminated the display glass directly to the LCD, reducing reflections and internal glare noticeably compared to prior iMacs. Reviewers were largely smitten with the design and screen quality, though some noted the thin edge was largely a cosmetic flourish since the machine was no thinner where components lived, and the lack of a user-serviceable interior (RAM was accessible on the 21.5-inch only with difficulty, the 27-inch remained more open) drew some criticism from the tinkering crowd.
