Solid-state touch wheel, 20 GB at the top, and the first Windows support via Musicmatch Jukebox.

iPod (2nd generation)

The second iPod doubled the top capacity to 20GB and replaced the moving scroll wheel with a solid-state touch wheel, which had no moving parts to wear out and worked through a fingertip rather than a physical turn. Apple added a wired remote on the headphone cable and a case. The important change was elsewhere. Apple shipped a Windows version that used Musicmatch Jukebox rather than iTunes, which was clumsy and worked, and it opened the iPod to roughly 95 percent of the computers in the world. This is the model where the iPod stopped being a Mac accessory. It still used FireWire, still cost $399 at the top end, and still held a hard drive that skipped if you shook it hard enough.

Reviews & Reception

The touch wheel replaced the moving scroll wheel, and the review treated it as the same iPod done better.

Good things come to those who wait and in usual Apple fashion, it's beautiful and simple to use.
