The iPhone X refined: the 7nm A12 Bionic, Smart HDR, Depth Control and IP68, on the same 5.8-inch OLED.
Released September 21, 2018 · Discontinued September 10, 2019 · From $999 (64 GB, unlocked)

The XS took the iPhone X and adjusted it. Same 5.8-inch OLED, same stainless steel and glass, same notch, with the A12 Bionic behind it, the first 7nm chip in any phone and roughly 15 percent faster on the CPU with a neural engine running eight times quicker than the A11's. Smart HDR arrived here. The camera captured a buffer of frames at different exposures and merged them, which recovered highlights and shadows that the X simply lost, and it worked well enough that the difference between the two generations is obvious in any backlit photo. Depth Control let you adjust Portrait mode background blur after the shot. Storage went to 512GB, water resistance to IP68, and the phone gained dual-SIM through an eSIM in most markets. It cost $999 and the 6.5-inch XS Max cost $1,099, which made the headline that autumn about price rather than anything Apple had engineered.
Reviewers read the XS as consolidation of the iPhone X design rather than a new direction, and said so about the price.
