iPhone XR

The XS chip behind an LCD and an aluminum frame at $250 less. The best-selling phone in the world for most of 2019.

Released October 26, 2018 · Discontinued September 14, 2021 · From $749 (64 GB, unlocked)

iPhone XR

The XR was the cheap one and it outsold both expensive ones. Apple put the A12 Bionic, the same chip as the XS, behind a 6.1-inch LCD at 1792x828, gave it an aluminum frame instead of stainless steel, one rear camera instead of two, and charged $749 rather than $999. The screen was the compromise. 326 pixels per inch on an LCD in a year when the XS ran 458 on OLED, and in practice almost nobody could see it across a room. Battery life was the best Apple had shipped, helped by the lower resolution and a larger cell than the XS. Portrait mode worked with one camera by using the neural engine to build the depth map in software, though it only recognized people and refused to blur anything else. It came in blue, coral, yellow, white, black and red, which Apple had not done since the 5c and did rather better this time. The XR was the best-selling phone in the world for most of 2019.

Reviews & Reception

The XR was positioned as the volume iPhone, and reviewers focused on what its lower price did and did not cost the buyer.

To Apple's credit, though, the iPhone XR never really feels compromised.
