iPhone SE (3rd generation)

The A15 Bionic and 5G in the iPhone 8 body. The last iPhone with Touch ID and a home button.

Released March 18, 2022 · Discontinued February 19, 2025 · From $429 (64 GB, unlocked)

iPhone SE (3rd generation)

The third SE kept the iPhone 8 body for a fourth year and put the A15 Bionic and 5G in it. Same 4.7-inch LCD, same bezels, same home button, same single camera, now running the same chip as the iPhone 13 and doing computational photography it could not do before. Photographic Styles arrived. So did Deep Fusion. The battery grew slightly and the back glass got tougher. At $429 it was $30 more than the SE 2 and still the cheapest iPhone by a wide margin. This is the last iPhone with Touch ID and a home button, and Apple discontinued it in February 2025 when the iPhone 16e replaced it with a Face ID design.

Reviews & Reception

The A15 and 5G arrived inside an unchanged 2017 body, and reviewers were blunt about the display.

If you're hellbent on getting an iPhone for under $500, and don't want a refurbished version of previous flagships, the iPhone SE is good enough.

It's basic, but it gets the job done.
