iPhone 8 Plus

The last big-screen iPhone with a home button, and where Portrait Lighting arrived alongside the dual camera.

Released September 22, 2017 · Discontinued April 15, 2020 · From $799 (64 GB, unlocked)

iPhone 8 Plus

The 8 Plus was the last big-screen iPhone with a home button and, for a while, the best camera Apple sold. Portrait Lighting arrived here alongside the existing Portrait mode, using the dual camera's depth map to relight a face after the shot was taken. Apple called it a beta. Wireless charging, glass back, A11 Bionic with the neural engine, True Tone, 3GB of RAM and a 2691 mAh battery round it out. On launch day the iPhone X was two months away and cost $300 more, which made the 8 Plus the sensible purchase and the one a lot of people regretted not waiting on. It held its own for years regardless, and it ran iOS updates until 2023.

Reviews & Reception

Engadget covered the 8 and 8 Plus in one review, with the Plus carrying the dual camera and Portrait Lighting.

They might not have the X's style, but the 8 and 8 Plus are truly excellent phones that won't let Apple die-hards and new customers down.

They're just saddled with a less exciting design.
