iPhone 8

The 8 arrived on the same September 2017 stage as the iPhone X and was immediately the less interesting phone in the room. That was unfair to it. Glass went back on the rear for the first time since the iPhone 4, which was there to allow Qi wireless charging, and the frame became 7000 series aluminum. Fast charging over USB-C arrived, getting to 50 percent in about half an hour with a charger Apple did not include. The A11 Bionic was a genuinely large jump, six cores and Apple's first neural engine, and it outran most laptops on single-core benchmarks at the time. True Tone shifted the display's white balance to match the room. The camera kept 12 megapixels and got a larger sensor and better low-light behavior. Everything else was an iPhone 7, down to the shape, and the 8 is the last iPhone with a home button and a Touch ID sensor on the front.

Reviews & Reception

Reviewers found the 8 technically excellent and visually stale, reviewed in the shadow of the iPhone X announced alongside it.

They might not have the X's style, but the 8 and 8 Plus are truly excellent phones that won't let Apple die-hards and new customers down.

They're just saddled with a less exciting design.
