iPhone 6

Apple spent years insisting a phone should be usable in one hand, and then Samsung sold a great many large phones, and in September 2014 Apple shipped two. The 6 went to 4.7 inches at 1334x750, the 6 Plus to 5.5 inches at full 1080p, and between them they produced the biggest iPhone upgrade cycle the company has ever had. Over 10 million sold in the opening weekend. The bodies went to rounded aluminum with the glass curving into the edges, thinner than the 5s at 6.9mm, and the volume buttons moved down the side where a bigger hand could reach them. The camera stayed at 8 megapixels and added phase-detection autofocus, which made it noticeably quicker to lock focus. Only the Plus got optical image stabilization. Then some of them bent. Thin aluminum and a large flat body meant a 6 Plus carried in a tight pocket could deform, and Apple's response that only nine customers had complained did not survive contact with the internet. The A8 and Apple Pay both arrived here, the latter using the Touch ID sensor from the 5s and a new secure element to do what Google Wallet had been trying to do since 2011.

Reviews & Reception

Reviewers read the larger screens as Apple catching up rather than leading, and said so plainly, while concluding the phones were better for it. The bending came later.

This year's iPhones aren't groundbreaking, nor are they perfect. But they demonstrate something far more important to Apple's success in the long run: freshness.
