ProMotion and the always-on display finally reach the standard iPhone, storage doubles to 256 GB at the same price, and the front camera goes to 18 MP.

The 17 is the year the base model stopped being the compromise. ProMotion finally arrived on the standard iPhone at 120Hz, eight years after the iPad Pro got it and six after the iPhone Pro, along with the always-on display. Storage doubled. 256GB now comes as standard at the same $799 the 128GB model cost. The front camera went to 18 megapixels with a square sensor that crops to either orientation, so it takes a landscape selfie without turning the phone. The screen grew to 6.3 inches and got a new anti-reflective coating that Apple says is three times more scratch resistant. The A19 and a 3.5x telephoto on a 48-megapixel sensor round it out.

ProMotion and the Center Stage front camera moved down from the Pro line, closing much of the gap for the standard model.
Putting my screen size preferences aside, the iPhone 17 remains the best iPhone for most people.
So, I can confidently say that even though there's one less option in the regular iPhone lineup than there was a year ago, the iPhone 17 is still the best iPhone for most of us.
