iPhone 13 Pro

ProMotion finally reached the iPhone, five years after the iPad Pro got it. The 13 Pro's OLED ran adaptively from 10Hz to 120Hz, which made scrolling and animation visibly smoother and cost nothing in battery because the panel dropped its refresh rate when the screen was static. Peak brightness went to 1200 nits. All three cameras were new. The wide got a larger sensor and an f/1.5 aperture, the ultra-wide gained autofocus and with it macro photography down to 2cm, and the telephoto went to 77mm for 3x. ProRes video recording arrived in an update, making this the first phone that could record a professional editing codec. Battery life went up by an hour and a half over the 12 Pro and the A15 Bionic ran a five-core GPU rather than the four in the standard 13. It shipped September 24, 2021 at $999.

Reviews & Reception

ProMotion was the upgrade reviewers kept returning to, more than the cameras Apple led with.

With faster screens, superb performance and long-lasting batteries, the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max are excellent phones.

But for basically anyone who uses iOS, the iPhone 13 Pro (and Pro Max, if you don't mind its weight) is a worthy upgrade.
