iPad Pro (12.9-inch, M2)

A spec bump with one genuinely odd feature. Apple added hover detection to the Apple Pencil, so the tip is tracked up to 12mm above the glass and applications can preview a brush stroke or expand a control before you touch down. Illustrators found it useful. Everyone else forgot it existed. The M2 brought roughly 15 percent more CPU and 35 percent more graphics than M1, with ProRes video capture arriving on the iPad for the first time. Everything else carried over: the mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR display on the 12.9-inch model, Thunderbolt, Face ID, the flat aluminum shape. Apple charged the same as before, which by 2022 counted as restraint.

Reviews & Reception

An M2 inside an otherwise unchanged 2021 design, which reviewers read as a holding pattern.

There's no question that the new iPad Pro is better than its predecessor.

But at a certain point, probably not too long from now, Apple will advance the form factor yet again.
