The iPad that changed shape. Apple removed the home button, squared off the sides, fitted Face ID that works in any orientation, and replaced Lightning with USB-C, which meant a tablet could suddenly drive a display or read a camera card directly. The Apple Pencil went magnetic too, attaching to the side and charging there instead of sticking out of a port like a novelty pen. The A12X Bionic beat most Intel laptops then on sale, which Apple claimed on stage and reviewers went away and confirmed. Every iPad Pro since has refined this design rather than departed from it.
The 2018 redesign brought Face ID and USB-C, and reviewers pressed on whether iOS could use the hardware.
