The last iPad with a home button and a headphone jack, kept on sale until 2025 because schools and first-time buyers kept choosing it.
Released September 24, 2021 · Discontinued March 4, 2025 · From $329 (64 GB, Wi-Fi)

The last iPad with a home button. Apple kept selling it for three years because people kept buying it. The ninth generation is the 2017 design with an A13 Bionic, a 10.2-inch non-laminated display, Touch ID, a Lightning port and a headphone jack. At $329 it was the cheapest iPad and, for schools and anyone buying a first tablet, the obvious one. Center Stage arrived on the front camera, keeping you in frame during video calls, which mattered a great deal in the year everyone was on video calls. Apple finally doubled base storage to 64GB after years of selling a 32GB model that filled up almost immediately. It lasted until 2025.
Reviewers called it good value and dated in the same breath, which is a fair summary of selling a 2017 design in 2021, and pointed first-time buyers at it anyway.
