The A12 Bionic at $329, roughly 40% faster than the 7th generation, shipped into the year every school started buying tablets.
Released September 18, 2020 · Discontinued September 14, 2021 · From $329 (32 GB, Wi-Fi)

The cheap iPad with the A12 Bionic, which is a considerably better chip than a $329 tablet had any need for. Apple took the 2017 body, kept the 10.2-inch display, the home button, the Lightning port and the headphone jack, and dropped in the processor from the iPhone XS. That made it roughly 40 percent faster than the seventh generation for the same money. It shipped in September 2020 into a year when every school in the world was suddenly buying tablets, and Apple sold an enormous number of them. It is not an interesting machine. It is the one that got a generation of children through remote schooling.
The A12 and a Neural Engine reached the cheapest iPad, which kept it the value pick.
Ultimately Apple delivered a well-rounded package for the price, and what it lacks in flashy thrills it makes up for with more consistently competent performance.
Taken together, they're enough to - once again - make this year's cheap iPad the best tablet deal you'll find out there.
