The cheapest full-size iPad Apple had sold, at $329, achieved partly by dropping the Air 2's laminated anti-reflective display.

It was just iPad again. Apple dropped the Air name, dropped the price to $329, and made this the cheapest full-size iPad it had ever sold. The internals came from the Air: an A9 chip, a 9.7-inch Retina display, Touch ID. What went backwards was the screen, which lost the lamination and the anti-reflective coating the Air 2 had, so there is a visible air gap between the glass and the panel again. Apple traded a worse display for a much better price, schools bought them in enormous quantity, and it ended up thicker and heavier than the Air 2 it replaced.
